A very kind blog visitor identified my Mystery Shrub as Ruttya fruticosa. Found some cultural information here and here.
Apparently it’s easy to propagate by seeds or cuttings, so I may try that down the road some time. Got too much other stuff going on right now to deal with it.

Bean Cages and Lettuce Boxes

When I posted last night, I said I’d build a Bean Cage in the next few days, but I had to do it today. It’s been a while since I grew bush beans, and I forgot how fast they grow. When I checked on them today, the first sprouts had already grown as tall as the little green cages. My cage isn’t pretty, but I do hope it works.

Baby Beans

I finally got all the baby basils transplanted into their nice peat pots and outside. The first batch graduated to a couple hours in the sun today, before I had to put them, and the baby peppers, back into the shade. Hope it won’t be too much more than a week or so before the basil I intended to plant in the garden are big enough to move into the garden.

I’ve mentioned that I bought a night-blooming jasmine and another shrub before. Been looking all over the net trying to find the origin and care for the second one, with no success. The nursery guy said it was called Rutaya, and was new. It must be really new, to be so conspicuously absent from the Net.

Whew! This is really the first chance I’ve had since I last posted to post again. I’ve either been busy doing, instead of writing, or too wiped to even type. That heat out there is gonna kill me yet, I swear.

What Would You Do With 36 Basil Plants?

I love the smell and look of basil. Any kind of basil. I haven’t met one yet I didn’t love. So I ordered a 6-basil seed mix, since it was cheaper than buying all the separate varieties. Planted a bunch of them, and, as far as I can tell, they ALL sprouted. I wanted to be sure I got a good chance of getting at least one of each kind, so now I have 36 baby basils. (more…)

I finished my bed Friday, then fertilized and watered it really well today, despite the ugly hot humid nasty weather. There’s a Pacific front coming in, and it’s been “thunderstorm weather” all day today. You know how it gets still and muggy, and you can feel the sky just waiting to explode? (more…)
Rats! Too Windy

The wind was (is) blowing like crazy today, so I can’t finish the last 5 sq ft or so of my garden. Bummer. And I still need lime. It ain’t easy trying to find garden lime in a place where the water and soil are so alkaline that most people want stuff to acidify the soil, not sweeten it. I better find some soon.
